Udon Thani, the 24th of June 2010 [PDN]: The homemade bomb was discovered by a concerned local resident after he observed smoke emanating from a plastic bag positioned under a public telephone booth in the area.
Discovering the contents to be what looked like a bomb, the resident informed local police of the suspicious device, who in turn requested the assistance of the bomb disposal experts.
An unnamed source within the bomb squad revealed that the device had been homemade. Furthermore the bomb was constructed using four lengths of PVC piping filled with ammunition grade gunpowder. The explosive packages were connected by seven joss sticks (incense sticks) which were to be lit by a burning cigarette upended as the wick. In this instance, the cigarette was extinguished prematurely.
The witness explained to police that he had observed smoke emanating from the bag for over 15-minutes before it suddenly stopped. Investigating the suspicious package he found the explosive device.
Fingerprinting of the scene was undertaken by police whilst Police Lieutenant Chidwong (Head of the Bomb Disposal Squad) revealed that the bomb had a destructive potential of approximately a 20-meter radius.
