Man Charged Over Tuesday’s Bangkok Bomb Blast

The police are pressing for 3-count charge against an anti-government Red Shirt supporter who hired a bomber to carry a bomb to attack the Bhumjaithai Party, coalition partner in the six-party government, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Pol Lt-Gen Santan Chayanont.

Bangkok, the 23rd of June 2010 [TNA]: The police chief said that the preliminary investigation indicated that a TNT bomb was fixed beneath a gas cylinder filled with gasoline built into a fruit-vendor’s cart, which was remotely detonated by mobile phone signal.

Victim Anek Singkhuntod later confessed that he was hired by a man named Kampol Khamkog to fill gasoline into a gas cylinder laid beneath the pushcart and park it at the party headquarters. The bomb exploded earlier than expected and instead wounded the man himself.

Gen Santan said Mr Anek was working as security guard in Laem Chabang, in the eastern province of Chonburi and knew well Mr Kampol who was in Siracha, Chonburi. The investigators believed that Mr Kampol was still in the kingdom and are collecting more evidence before asking to court to issue arrest warrant, said Gen Santan.

He added that the police expected to charge him with three counts–possessing explosives, causing explosion that hurt other people and damaged other people’s assets and carry explosive in public place without permission.

Meanwhile, Bhumjaithai Party spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said the bombing was meant to damage the party headquarters. He said the party’s key figures usually use the entrance near the bombing scene from which vendors are restricted from entering and Newin Chidchob was about to be at the scene during the explosion.
