France, the 22nd of June 2010 [PDN]: French convict, Nicolas Cocaign, openly admitted to the Rouen Court that he had killed his victim, Thierry Baudry, in 2007. His lawyers revealed to the magistrate that their client had repeatedly requested for psychiatric help prior to the murder, but was refused or ignored by correctional officers.
Cocaign’s lawyers have used several cases of precedent, regarding negligence in relation to the handling of inmates in French prisons, in his defence, something of which the Court of European Human Rights has previously touched upon.
Shockingly, after brutally assaulting, stabbing and suffocating his victim, Cocaign then removed a rib from Baudry’s chest and ate a piece of his lung. Reportedly he had mistaken the piece of lung for Baudry’s heart, which he told investigators he wanted to eat in order to consume his soul. Cocaign has pleaded not guilty to the secondary charge of ‘barbarism.’
Cocaign explained to the court, “I made several appeals for help, saying I was a man capable of being dangerous. I took action, and then they took me seriously.” Also revealed at the trial was a summary of Cocaign’s life, from his adoption at the age of three to his troubled youth and numerous scrapes with the law.
At present, Cocaign [39] is currently serving a sentence for attempted rape, if he is convicted of Thierry Baudry’s murder a sentence of life imprisonment is expected to be handed down. A verdict on the case is expected to be revealed later this week.
Cocaign reportedly stated to the court that he was now feeling much more stable having been receiving constant psychiatric treatment since the murder.
