Police Target Internal Gambling & Internet Betting Markets

The Metropolitan Police Bureau revealed that it has already restricted access to over 240 illegal betting websites, setup to subjugate gambling on the FIFA World Cup 2010 currently being staged in South Africa. In addition a tough new stance is being taken on any officers found to be involved with gambling, with instant termination from the force.

Bangkok, the 12th of June 2010 [PDN]: In an attempt to curb gambling in Thailand over the World Cup period which started on Friday, police in cooperation with the Information and Communication Technology Ministry are actively blocking betting websites from local and foreign servers and have threaten tough action against police found to be involved in the illegal activity.

A special investigation center has been gathering evidence on World Cup betting with police technology experts involved in the search for gambling websites based in the country. The tournament is due to end on the 11th of July.

Bangkok police have been strongly ordered by the National Police Bureau to refrain from becoming involved in the illegal activity and any that where found to be participating would be severely punished with termination from the force. At present police investigators has closed 248 websites involved with illegal betting on the World Cup.

Anti-gambling activist groups have submitted open letters to the acting National Police Chief General Prateep Tanprasert, urging him to suppress the football gambling “dens”, especially those active around educational centers nationwide. They also advocate the introduction of tough new laws for punishing offenders including those involved with the internet betting sites.
