As the World Cup in South Africa prepares for kickoff, bars and entertainment venues around Pattaya are eagerly anticipating its commencement, supporter flags, logos, hats, shirts and all forms of football paraphernalia are beginning to appear on the streets as the FIFA World Cup 2010 promises to be one of the most lively yet.

Pattaya, the 11th of June 2010 [PDN]: Since the beginning of June an increasing amount of street vendors and shop-house businesses have started to cater for the impending World Cup. Businesses have started selling all forms of paraphernalia including; shirts, scarves, hats, watches, flags, pillows, key chains and much more. All the major competitors at this year’s tournament are available with some specialist shops selling the less established footballing nationals such as Australia, North Korea, Algeria, New Zealand and the Honduras.

Entertainment venues have already adorned their walls with decoration, proudly displaying the flags of several countries, usually Brazil, Argentina and the European heavyweights in a show of general respect for footballing ability. Many establishments and even convenience stores have requested that all their staff dress in football apparel to subjugate further business over the busy 30-day football festival. Foreign owned bars have become potential hotspots of national pride over the coming 4 weeks, adorned in the national colours and the passion of its patriarch.

The increased popularity of this year World Cup has forced a clampdown by authorities on illegal pubic broadcasting on an international scale, which will also be relevant to Pattaya. All businesses wishing to show the live matches in their establishments will be required to obtain a public broadcasting license from the Pattaya RS Company. Failure to obtain a license may result in fines of up to Bt800,000 or a 4-year prison sentence.

Mr. Appirat a spokesman from the RS Company in Pattaya informed PDN that the cost of a license to display any and all of the match for the length of the 30-day tournament starts at Bt10,000 per television, various exemptions and extenuating circumstances apply. For more information on how to obtain a license or if you are exempt from requiring one, please contact the RS Company Customer Service line on; 02-938-8000 extension 205-207.

The potential for corrupt practices in the monitoring of broadcast licenses during the World Cup has also been acknowledged by the RS Company, who state that they are the only authority authorised to issues a license to any public entertainment venues and retain the sole authority to handle breaches of the broadcasting agreement. All RS Company officers will have a signed certified identification card present on their person which they will present to the bar owner upon entry to the establishment, company administrators advise that the local police are NOT authorised to handle payment of any fines in relation to a breach of the broadcasting laws.

Wow.
News is published on the first day of the games. No bar owners have been informed about this, apart from rumors.
Maximum penalty is 4 Years prison, and the best is yet to come: Police is not entitled to prosecute!
Does that mean the agents of the private enterprise RS have the power to incarcerate wrongdoers?
Or, rather, is the editor and writer of this mag for real?

Last world cup, I was watching a match at a beer bar on Soi Bukhow and a drunken German bottled my mate (English) and blinded him in one eye.

The Pattaya Police didn't want to know. The German died 22 days later. He jumped from his apartment window 5th floor.

Warning to Germans: Don't mess with us Brits.
