France, the 24th of May 2010 [PDN]: World number one and 1st seed Roger Federer barely raised a sweat in his French Open first round match against Australian Peter Luczak, finishing with a straight sets win 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

Federer worked his way into the first set in 30 degree heat at Roland Garros, where sunhats and ice cream was the theme in the stands, before coolly finishing the young Aussie off with some exquisite strokes and cunning drop shots. Federer will face Colombian Alejandro Falla in the second round.
Third seed Serbian Novak Djokovic overcame a second set shocker before positively breezing to victory in 4-sets against Kazakhstan’s Evgeny Korolev 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Playing on the Suzanne Lenglen Court, Djokovic steamed through the first set before falling asleep in the second losing 3-6 to the 73rd ranked Kazakh. Djokovic eventually found his feet to bring the match home in 4. Djokovic will now face Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the second round.

The world number 4 player, Britain’s Andy Murray progressed into the second round, albeit after a gruelling 5-setter against crowd favourite Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Gasquet, fresh off a 10 match win streak, showed early signs of his current form taking the first two sets against Murray before succumbing to the searing heat. Murray, one of the fittest players on tour, finished the match winning three consecutive sets for a 4-6 6 7(5) 6-4 6-2 6-1 win. Murray’s next match doesn’t get any easier as he is set to meet Argentine clay-court specialist Juan Ignacio Chela.
