House Burgled Swept Over 700,000 Baht During Pattaya Curfew

Share
A cheeky thief helped him self to a bottle of whiskey whilst burgling a house during last nights’ curfew in Pattaya.

Pattaya 20th May 2010 [PDN] While visiting the entertainment areas of Pattaya at approximately 7pm, Mrs. Thipphawan Prakobthit [45] and her boyfriend Mr. James Quiny [60] heard of that a curfew had been put in place covering the whole of the Chonburi area. Instead of going straight home, they decided to visit the house of a friend, leaving around midnight to return to their home.

On arrival, they found the door had been damaged and on entering discovered the house in disarray. Mrs. Prakobthit stated that property had been damaged in the process of a burglary that had taken place with a black bag containing £11,500 (700,000 baht) missing. The money belonging to Mr. Quiny was for his visa and passport as well as his daily expenses. In addition to the theft and destruction, the cheeky thief had opened and helped himself to a drink from a bottle of whiskey.

Mrs. Prakobthit informed Banglamung Police, asking for their help in apprehending the thief as this was the third time they had been burgled with no success of finding the culprit.

John's rule, follow Hugh's rule, keep only what you need at home. I love my android phone, it goes with me and I store all my document copies there and online securely(ie. passport, etc.). Carry debit cards from a few different institutions and a few thousand baht max, that way even if you lose it all, can still access cash and copies almost anywhere. Oh, here's a couple more neat tricks I use also, send money via Western Union, etc. to myself, only pick it up if/when necessary and/or keep a PayPal balance that you can access with card, online, mobile phone, etc.
You can use your stored card numbers online to purchase airline tickets and almost anything else you need online.

Insurance cover rarely includes cash in excess of a few thousand baht. So if he's lying he won't gain much, if he not, then he's a moron lose-lose.

Why do all the people who get robbed in Pattaya have 500 000 - 1000 0000 Baht in cash home, and their Gold Rolex and Gold for 500 000 Baht was also stolen?? Hmmm
The amount of money and values do not match the type people or the way it looks like inside their home.

A deeply saddening story. However leaving that amount of money in the house is insanity.

I shall be writing to the Mayor of Pattaya about this case and shall be demanding action.

OldJake, are you really serious when you expect the thai police to take fingerprints?? i had my neighbour stealing things from my property while i was outside, (however somebody has seen him and he also confirmed when confronted), 5 different BiB comes to meet me, they have seen the stolen items in neighbour property and he confirmed they were my things, BiBs couldn't care less about his name, my stuff, etc, all they wanted to know was MY name and check MY documents, i then asked what should i do if i meet a thief in my property holding a weapon in the middle of the night, they didn't answer but just smiled and then left.....welcome to Thailand people!!! oh i forgot to mention that the guy also came to see me holding a home-made sword behind his back with a hand while with the other was making vulgar gestures to me and telling me he will kill me with other sweet words i will let you imagine....

Was he going to buy a Thailand Elite visa or something?

I'm sure they would welcome this distinguished gentleman, who even seems to be sponsored by a leading beer brand.

The third time? I think I'd start checking the girlfiend's relatives/husband for any recent lifestyle changes. An "inside job", someone with knowledge of what was available to be stolen is a high probablity.

My sympathies are with this couple, of course, but why oh why would anyone keep that sort of money in a dwelling unless secured in a substantial safe? It makes no sense to me.
