In the third such attack in less a month, a crazed man has stabbed 28 children and 3 adults at a nursery school in Eastern China. Remarkably, no deaths were reported in the heinous attack, although 5 children have been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

China, the 30^th of April 2010 [PDN]: Chinese media report the man, Mr. Xu Yuyuan [47], as having attacked the pupils as they sat down for lessons in the morning. Reportedly the schools security guard and two teachers were also stabbed after trying to prevent the attack. Police state that Mr. Xu was armed with a 20cm long kitchen knife and that the victims were all approximately 4-years-old.

An official from the Taixing City government stated; “The gate-keeper, teachers, and students were attacked. The injured are receiving treatment in hospital. We don’t have any reports of deaths yet.”

Yesterdays attack comes after a former school teacher was apprehended after having stabbed 16 children and one teacher in an attack in the countries South on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday a former doctor was executed for the vicious stabbing murder of 8 school children in the Fujian province in March.

The increase in attacks of this nature has prompted the Chinese Education Ministry into urging its educational institutions to upgrade their security. Since a spate of attacks in 2004, many Chinese schools have employed professional security guards however these latest incidents has led the Education Ministry into ordering that all schools teach their children about ‘safety awareness’ and make sure that the kids are escorted home.

The incidents have also sparked a debate about the motives of the killers, with some suggesting that rapid social change and growing unemployment has led to an increase in psychiatric illnesses. . Others suggest that not enough attention’s paid to what they call “the voices of the weak”. When that happens they say “they take revenge on society”.
