Sattahip, the 25th of April 2010 [PDN]: Sattahip Police Investigator, Lieutenant Colonel Niphon Pomsanam received a report on Saturday regarding a severe motorbike/car accident that had occurred along the Sukhumvit Road. A team of investigative officers along with the Sawang Rodjanatham Foundation were dispatched to the incident to investigate.
At the scene, in front of the Sea Paradise Hotel in Sattahip, police discovered the damaged remains of a bronze Yamaha Spark motorbike with attached side-trailer. On the opposite side of the road was an overturned black Toyota Vios. The driver of the crashed car Mr. Wigoon Wangkaew [34] a Sergeant at the Aircraft Combat and Shore Maintenance Center in Sattahip, had freed himself from the wreckage and was receiving first-aid for his minor injuries. The couple, who had been
travelling on the motorbike, Mr. Somsak Saengkrajang [41] and his wife Mrs. Pranom Cherdchu [42], were severely injured in the accident and immediately transported to the Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip.
Sgt. Wangkaew revealed to police that he had been driving from the Sattahip Market to his home in Phlutaluang when he fell asleep at the wheel, crashing into the couple riding along on their motorbike and side-trailer. Sgt. Wangkaew stated that his vehicle had then veered over the traffic island rolling several times before coming to a stop on the opposite side of the road.
Police spoke briefly to the injured Mr. Saengkrajang who revealed that he and his wife are Somtam vendors and had been returning from the Sattahip Market to their home in Soi Khaomon having purchased some food for their business. Mr. Saengkrajang revealed that he had observed Sgt. Wangkaew’s car approaching erratically and at speed when it collided with them, before crossing the center island and rolling to a stop on the opposite side of the road.

Officers have taken the statements of both parties and conducted a thorough examination of the scene. Further interrogation of the injured couple is expected to be conducted upon their full recovery, however; a charge of negligent driving is expected to be laid against Sgt. Wangkaew.
