“Sugar” Shane Mosley Labels Mayweather Fight “Destiny”

Reigning WBA welterweight champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley revealed that the impending fight with undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather was his “destiny” following the unfortunate collapse of the much anticipated Mayweather – Pacquiao fight.

New York, the 21st of April 2010 [PDN]: Mosley’s announcement came before the packed news conference in New York, at which the fight was officially announced for the 1st of May in Las Vegas. Mosley further stoked the fire by claiming that this fight was the biggest in his already illustrious career (46-5, 39 knockouts). “It’s a fight the world wants to see,” he said.

The announcement of the Mayweather-Mosley clash comes after Mayweather’s (40-0, 25 knockouts) heavily anticipated bout with Filipino, Manny Pacquiao, broke down over controversial demands for random drug testing were turned down by the Pacquiao camp. Mosley was questioned in relation to the failed fixture and his subsequent pairing, stating; “I have to be honest; I thought they were going to be able to avoid me. I thought they would be able to fight each other and retire. But this is the fight that had to happen. This is a fight of destiny.”

Mosley, a former IBF lightweight champion, has fought at welterweight or higher exclusively since relinquishing his lightweight belt in 1999, including seven bouts at light middleweight. Conversely, Mayweather has fought at welterweight only five times. His last two contests at the lower weight were a victory over lightweight champion Marquez and a December 2007 stoppage of Britain’s Ricky Hatton, both challengers had been moving up in weight at the time.

Mosley believes his greater experience at higher weights will be to his advantage. “As a welterweight, he hasn’t fought any of the top welterweights,” he said. “I’ll be the first one.” Although Mosley’s WBA title will not be on the line, the California native believes inflicting Mayweather’s first defeat will be a large enough notch in his belt. “It’s a challenge that I’m ready to take. I’m ready to go into the history books as the guy who beat Floyd Mayweather, the guy who beat everybody out there, the last man standing.”

I'm looking forward to this fight. I always thought Mosely would have a better chance than Pacquio of beating Mayweather at this weight.

Let's hope I am able to secure my ringside seat at Las Vegas on May 1st. There has been air-traffic problems over Europe, so I might have to take the backdoor route over the Pacific.
