Jenson Button Wins in China Giving McLaren a 1-2 Finish

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button overcame tough conditions on Sunday to give the McLaren racing team a 1-2 finish at the Chinese Grand Prix.

China, the 18^th of April 2010 [PDN]: McLaren’s Jenson Button launched to the head of the Formula One championships following some shrewd tire choices in changing weather that forced most drivers into making 4 pits to Buttons 2. Fellow McLaren driver and former world champion Lewis Hamilton came in second ahead of Mercedes GP driver Nico Rosburg.

In a rain affected race which saw all drivers start on dry weather tires, a dampening track saw almost all of the grid pit and change to wet weather tires whilst Button, Rosberg and Renault’s Robert Kubica dashed to the front as the rain failed to eventuate.

Button stated after the race; “It was my best race victory. This one was pretty special because it was very tough conditions. It was a tricky race out there and again we called it right. It was not just about being quick; it’s about reading the conditions.” In relation to the controversial tire change options button noted, “Sometimes you have to take those risks. That is what won us the race — being on the right tire and the right time made all the difference.”

Hamilton, who was also forced to double pit earlier in the races, threatened to overtake his teammate towards the end of the race as Button ran wide with five laps to go, with tire wear becoming an issue. Hamilton’s own tire troubles however saw him consolidate second position giving McLaren a handy one-two finish in tricky conditions.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finished in forth after briefly challenging Rosburg for a podium finish. Earlier in the race Alonso was given a drive-through penalty after jumping the start. That penalty along with his 4 pit stops meant he pitted a remarkable five times whilst Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari made six stops, one short of the F1 record.

Renault’s Robert Kubica finished fifth whilst teammate and debutant Russian Vitaly Petrov earned his first points in Formula One finishing seventh. Pole sitter and defending race champion Sebastian Vettal in the Red Bull car separated the Renault pairing, finishing Sixth.

After four races this season, Button leads the drivers’ standings with 60 points, ahead of Rosberg’s 50. Hamilton and Alonso are tied for third with 49 points. McLaren also took over the lead in the constructors’ standings, with 109, ahead of Ferrari with 90. Mercedes jumped to third with 78, ahead of Red Bull with 73.

Paul Buckley: You make an excellent point. The BBC are under PC obligation to raise the status of ethnic sportsmen and women.

Just look at the newsreaders on BBC World. There are at least two of them who I can't understand.

I'm looking forward to the 'British Empire Games' in India later this year. I remember when Britain ruled two thirds of the world and ruled it well. Look at Zimbabwe now, it's a basket case.
