Sleep disorders are a common reason for visits to the doctor, who then prescribe sleeping tablets which is a dangerous prelude to your body requiring them permanently. Insufficient sleep can lead to various problems resulting in motor vehicle and industrial accidents, cognitive dysfunction, depression, stress and decrements in daytime work performance owing to fatigue or sleepiness. At the end of the day, what we all need is a good night’s sleep. Sleep is a natural requirement of the body and reason for the lack of it needs to be identified and treated accordingly.
Insomnia is by far the most common problem of sleep deprivation. This condition can be caused by a number of reasons. Firstly, take into consideration the age of your mattress. In order to clinch a sale, people are told the mattress has a twenty year warranty, this is not true. Mattresses generally have a life span of about ten years. You may flip your mattress over, but the end result will remain the same, your mattress will wear with time. If your spouse is heavier than you, it is then reasonable to assume the mattress will wear one side than the other.
Next is your sleeping posture, which again can be due to the state of your mattress and your pillow. If you wake up with no feeling in your hands and or feet, you may be pinching nerves or cutting of blood circulation. If you wake with a kink in your neck which can be painful, it will wear off through out the day, but keep getting this kink and you can end up with ‘subluxation’ in your spine. If you wake with a stiff back, you may have slept in one position for too long.
Sleep apnea is a condition that causes lack of sleep due to breathing problems with the person getting breathless to such an extent that it will wake the person from his sleep. There are often gaps in the breathing, with gasping or choking. Sleep apnea is often seen in obese people and in such cases, it is best that they lose weight and sleep in a position that will ensure a continuous flow of air.
Another common and annoying problem is snoring, not so much for the person who snores, but the person who has to sleep with him or her. Snoring can be caused by narrowing of the airways, excessive weight, poor posture or due to the presence of physical deviations in the nose and or throat.
Narcolepsy is another sleep disorder where the person experiences extreme sleepiness and may fall asleep at the drop of a hat wherever they may be. They may suffer from intermittent episode of falling asleep. The treatment for this requires a combination of treatment, using medications and behavioral counseling.
If you calculate the hours of sleep you get per day, and the amount of sleep per year, you will find that you sleep up to 25% of your life away! Well, if you are going to sleep that much, you might as well have a “good night’s sleep” and wake up refreshed and healthy. A hundred years ago we used to sleep up to 9 hour per night, which is an indicator to the problem now.
Proper diet will help assist in a good night’s sleep. Staying away from heavy carbohydrates and eating a lighter dinner, consisting of proteins and fruits will give you better a night’s sleep, but the emphasis is on ‘ light dinner.’ Also don’t drink tea or coffee late in the evening, as these stimulants will definitely keep you awake.
Finally, establishing pre-bedtime rituals, you should end all your chores and other duties, at least half an hour before bed time. This is important for the body and mind to relax and prepare itself sleep. Take up light activities like reading preferably a boring book. Most people have the habit of watching the television before going to bed. This should be avoided if possible as watching TV can stimulate the brain and keep you awake the whole night, it would be better to listen to soft music. Another way to relax before bed is by taking a warm and soothing bath. In short, any activity that is monotonous will aid in falling asleep at night.
A good masseuse will also help with a good nights sleep. Having a regular massage can help relieve those pinched nerves, and treat those tight muscles, all in all making your body relax and you feeling great.
If you suffer from insomnia and you’ve ruled out all the above, then your problem is geopathic stress. The house or apartment you live in is built on land that has bad feng shui, caused by black water lines, radon gas etc. The only way to cure this and your insomnia is to employ a feng shui consultant or move.
