WTA, the 25th of March 2010 [PDN]: Already a winner of the prestigious award on two prior occasions Serena also took out the award for best Doubles Team of the Year with her sister Venus Williams after the pair won 3 Grand Slams, failing at the French Open.
Serena’s award, along with the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award, which she won earlier in the month, is recognition of the quality tennis she has shown over the course of last season. Last year Serena won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, also reaching the Semi-Finals of the US Open and the Quarter-Finals at the French Open. Backing up into the New Year, Serena successfully defended her Australian Open title in January.
The 2009 season also saw Serena win 3 out of 4 Grand Slam Doubles trophies in partnership with her sister Venus Williams. The pair only faltering in the French Open for 2009, this is quite some feat considering both women featured heavily in the singles events during the two week competitions.
Other award winners on the night included Kim Clijsters who won the Comeback Player of the Year title, American Melanie Oudin who took out the Best Newcomer and Elena Dementieva who won the Fan Favourite of the Year Award.
