Serena Williams Wins WTA World Player of Year 2009

In a year which saw her win two grand slams, a host of other minor titles and 3 out of 4 grand slam doubles titles, it was hardly a surprise when on Thursday night Serena Williams was announced as the WTA Player of the Year for 2009 by the sports governing body.

WTA, the 25^th of March 2010 [PDN]: Already a winner of the prestigious award on two prior occasions Serena also took out the award for best Doubles Team of the Year with her sister Venus Williams after the pair won 3 Grand Slams, failing at the French Open.

Serena’s award, along with the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award, which she won earlier in the month, is recognition of the quality tennis she has shown over the course of last season. Last year Serena won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, also reaching the Semi-Finals of the US Open and the Quarter-Finals at the French Open. Backing up into the New Year, Serena successfully defended her Australian Open title in January.

The 2009 season also saw Serena win 3 out of 4 Grand Slam Doubles trophies in partnership with her sister Venus Williams. The pair only faltering in the French Open for 2009, this is quite some feat considering both women featured heavily in the singles events during the two week competitions.

Other award winners on the night included Kim Clijsters who won the Comeback Player of the Year title, American Melanie Oudin who took out the Best Newcomer and Elena Dementieva who won the Fan Favourite of the Year Award.

Let's not forget that Serena William is undoubtedly the current best female tennis player in the world based on her perfromance. Look at all the current upcoming players and those seasoned players who have been around the circuit for a while now - to have won so many grandslams like she's achieved is no easy feet!!!
''ONLY TRUE CHAMPIONS '' can do this cos they have what it takes to win big matches..and you know what she has the balls to do it. She's not only physically and mentally imposing - she is excellent and she knows how to win!!!! The hunger , the passion , you name it. She has it all.
It's a shame there are so many racist people out there who have tried , will continue to try and say real nasty things about her. Go bury yourself(ves) in some hole cos to show how really , really good Serena is. Negative comments like she often receives from time to time only makes her even better cos she's got some uniques metal strength and nobody can take that away from her!!!! And that is my friend the sign of a TRUE CHAMPION!!!!!
Serena - You go girl!!! You are certainly the best female tennis player of your generation!!!!!!!

I have no idea how she won this. Her disgraceful verbal abuse of an Asian lines-woman last year was perhaps the worst behaviour I have ever witnessed by a sportswoman. Let us not forget that she twice threatened to kill her by inserting a tennis ball in to her throat. Check the clip out on Youtube.
