The Underlying Magic Behind The Thai Battle For Power

Share
The blood-sacrifices and Brahminical curses uttered and reinforced by a bloody-footed priest stamping up the wall of PM Abhisit’s residence, countered in turn by a Democratic throwing holy water, are leading some in the world’s press to investigate the supernatural undertones of the current polemical battle in Thailand.

The Brahmin who had been employed to twice curse the Democrats was later denounced by the Royal Brahminical leadership as not being in keeping with Brahmin traditions and even questioning his right to call himself a Brahmin; which he countered by saying that his father had been a Royal Brahmin priest. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Korn Korn Chatikavanij and Red Shirt leader, Jatuporn Prompan, are both accusing each other of having taken Thailand’s political crisis into the realm of black magic.

Thailand, whilst ostensibly a Theravadic Buddhist country, in fact is steeped in a tradition which includes Khmer black magic, animism, (the belief in spirits), Hinduism and paganism, apart from the individualistically oriented form of Buddhism, as opposed to Mahayana Buddhism which is more altruistic. Festivals, especially royal ones, such as the planting of the first rice crop demand the blessings of holy oxen and or water buffalo, which is a Brahminical rite, for which a Royal Brahminical priesthood is retained.

The royal court employs also astrologers to decide on auspicious days. Thaksin Shinawatra is additionally known to be firm believer in astrology and has even been accused by Wassana Namnuan of the Bangkok Post of indulging in black magic. Wassana also applies the same accusation to his opponents, asserting that both sides  have regularly engaged in black magic battles for political dominance for several years. Wassana also asserts that Thaksin believes he is the reincarnation of a Burmese king who slaughtered many Thais in a past life, necessitating extensive karmic neutralization. Furthermore, Wassana maintains that Thaksin performed several saiyasat, or black magic rituals, while he was premier to enable him to rule for his whole lifetime. “Performing dark rites to increase one’s power and defeat your adversaries is as pervasive among the political class as bribery and vote buying,” according to an article in Time, quoting Wassana Namnuan.

We shall just have to see how effective various sides’ spells and incantations are in winning the battle for ultimate power in Thailand.
