A Belgian tourist visiting the seaside resort of Pattaya has had his bag, containing over 10,000 baht in cash, snatched by Thai youths. The man was waiting in line at a local 7-Eleven when the incident occurred, during the middle of the day.

Pattaya, the 17th of March 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 1:30pm, police Lieutenant Colonel Klitsakorn Thongin (Pattaya Police Deputy Superintendent) was notified of a robbery involving a foreigner near the Dusit Thani Resort on Pattaya-Naklua Road. The report stated that a number of local residents had been successful in apprehending one of the two Thai youths involved in the crime. A team of police were subsequently dispatched to the scene to investigate further.

At the scene, officers were confronted by Mr. Omer Baillieu [60] a Belgian national. Mr. Baillieu explained to police that he had been waiting to purchase some items at the nearby 7-Eleven when his bag was snatched from him by a Thai youth. He stated that immediately following the theft he asked the local residents in front of the store for assistance, subsequently the offender’s accomplice was captured by a motorbike taxi driver. The main culprit who was in possession of the stolen bag managed to escape. Mr. Baillieu states that along with several valuable items the bag contained over 10,000 baht in cash.

Police interrogated Mr. Mai (alias) [17], who stated that he had planned the robbery with the other man, but stated that he did not know his name, as they had only become friends that day. Investigating officers are reluctant to believe the mans story, arresting him for further interrogation back at the station.

barry: I fully understand that there is no welfare for Thais, but this is a young and healthy lad who could find some sort of work and chooses not to. He probably spends all of his money on drugs and beer. Plus, nobody need starve in Thailand, any hungry person can present himself at a Wat for basic food which shall be given freely. Think, before you contribute vacuous thoughts to this forum.

Of course Hugh Jorgan is correct. Maybe we should publicise Barry the do-gooder's address to all the thieves in pattaya so they can pillage his apartment or house while he is busy banging a two dollar hooker he stumbled accross in the gutter and watered and fed it.

I agree with you Hugh Jorgan and as for Barry how can you justify your comments that these people must steal because they are poor and have no handouts????????

A very sad case indeed. As a former victim of street crime, this kind of blatant theft makes my blood boil. The Thai thieves should be publicly flogged with bamboo sticks, then have sea salt rubbed into their wounds and then have an indelible tattoo etched on their forehead, reading THIEF in four international languages.
