Pattaya, the 13th of March 2010 [PDN]: Pattaya City Deputy Mayor Weerawat Khakhai chaired the opening ceremony along with Burapha Management and Tourism Director Wutthichat Suntharasamai. After the formalities were completed, Mr. Khakhai delivered a speech to the gathered audience, in regards to Pattaya’s stagnating tourism industry. Following the brief opening ceremony, guests and visitors were free to walk around and observe the Innovative Health exhibition that Burapha University students designed.
Mr. Khakhai described Pattaya as a world-class tourism resort, stating that, over a million visiting holiday makers both from overseas and domestically visited the region each year. Further disclosing the tourism industries importance to the Pattaya economy as it is solely responsible for approximately 60-70 billion baht in revenue every year.
Worryingly, Mr. Khakhai announced that tourism in the region had begun to stagnate over the past 2 years and time for change has come upon Pattaya administrators. Political instability, increased crime rate and the global economic crisis were all attributed, by the deputy mayor, to have affected Pattaya’s image and as result attractiveness to foreigners.
The deputy mayor revealed that, the Pattaya City Administrators and Police were cooperating extensively in an attempt to clean up the cities image. A greater amount and variety of events have been organised for the city over the coming months with the intention on stimulating the tourism industry in the region. Pattaya police have begun a crackdown on crime over the past month, significantly helping to clean up the popular tourist destinations and certain notoriously bad areas of the city.
Events scheduled for the next few months include, the annual Pattaya Music Festival 2010, Pattaya International Fashion Week 2010 (where a Guinness World Record attempt for longest fashion parade will be held), The World Kumite Championships 2010 and the Yamaha Young Talent Festival 2010.
