The father of a teenage daughter has tragically lost his life in a horrific accident along the Sukhumvit Road in Pattaya. The incident occurred when a pickup, containing the man and his daughter and teenage niece, collided at high speed with the rear end of an 18-wheeler heavy haulage vehicle.

Pattaya, the 9th of March 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 3:00pm on Tuesday, police Lieutenant Colonel Anuchet Katsomboon (Dongtan Police Investigator) was notified of a fatal traffic accident. The incident occurred along the Sukhumvit Road at the 165-166 kilometer mark towards Sattahip. A team of police along with Sawang Boriboon rescue officers were immediately dispatched to the scene to investigate and render assistance.

At the scene, officers discovered the severely damaged remains of a bronze-gold Isuzu Camp pickup. The roof of the vehicle had been completely ripped off as a result of the collision. Still in the driver’s seat, the deceased body of Mr. Amnaj Obsuk [38] the Bang Narng District Organisation Civil Chief, Phanthorng, was found. Mr. Obsuk had suffered multiple skull fractures and was covered in blood. Medical personnel state that he would have died instantaneously as a result of his injuries.

Mr. Obsuk’s teenage daughter and his niece, Miss Piyarat Obsuk [14] and Miss Thatsanee Jaroonphoonsap [14], who were travelling in the rear of the pickup had sustained severe injuries and were immediately transported to the nearby Pattaya Memorial Hospital. The two girls are now reported to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Police investigations revealed the 18-wheeler heavy haulage vehicle parked 50 meters further up the road with two large concrete stakes protruding from the rear of the trucks flatbed. Interrogation with Mr. Preecha Suthiprapha, the driver of the truck, revealed that he had been returning to the road from the hard shoulder when the pickup driven by Mr. Obsuk approached at high speed, colliding with the rear of the concrete pylons protruding from the rear of the 18-wheeler.

Mr. Suthiprapha has been remanded in police custody awaiting further investigations as to the cause of this tragic accident. Police will conduct interviews with the two teenage girls once they have fully recovered from their respective injuries.

Unfortunately your average Thai only concentrates whilst driving on what is 10 metres in front of them and not what is to the sides, behind or 100 metres further up the road.

Any vehicle that runs into anything or the one in front is going too fast and is to blame.
Very sad but speed kills.

A tragic accident. But in most civilised countries it is illegal to have two concrete posts overhanging by 30 feet a flat-back lorry without dedicated lighting, reflective discs or even plastic hazard tape. The family of the deceased should sue the haulage company for several million baht.

Of course it’s not very obvious that the load is dangerous.
