Recalcitrant Thai Students Face Deportation From US

Share
A group of recalcitrant Thai students, ostensibly studying at a Florida language school have broken the terms of their visa contracts by not attending classes regularly and currently face deportation from the US.

March 9, [PDN]: One of the ways of entering and staying in a foreign country is to obtain a student visa, this applies as much in Thailand as the US and for 51 Thai students in Florida, not abiding by the strict attendance regulations has rendered them liable to deportation, according to the TNA.

Thani Thongphakdi, Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Information Department, announced that the group of 51 had been detained by the authorities and their school, Florida Language School, has been shut for not ensuring that the students abided by the requirements to attend classes as full time students, regularly.

The students in question have been detained without bail and must appear individually in front of an immigration judge for violating US immigration law. They have the option of returning home voluntarily or to remain in the US to fight against deportation. There were also a number of other Thai students who weren’t detained, but who had also contravened immigration laws, they were merely advised to return to Thailand.

Mr Thani further advised any Thai students who were contemplating studying abroad that they should choose their schools well and abide by the student visa laws or face the same predicament.

Having studied at a Thai university I think this should apply here also, many students sign up just for the visa, a signed letter from the university office should be presented to immigration every 90 days in my opinion. Many sign up pay for a semester then get their money back at the end for the courses which they do not take.

There are many "diploma mills" in the US, schools that take the money, and have little or no further requirements to get a diploma, including attending class. Some would say, not unlike many schools here, where students are promoted/graduated without benefit of learning anything. It's good to hear someone noticed the "party animals" scam and took appropriate action. Guess the Thai parents will be disappointed their kids won't be bringing home an US University (worthless)dipolma to show to all their friends.
