Thailand Tourism offering Tourists “Protest” Insurance

Share
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is continuing to offer insurance coverage worth US$10,000 to anyone harmed as a result of riots and demonstrations. Officials revealed that the incentive package is an attempt to encourage tourism growth despite the political instabilities that are currently afflicting the Kingdom.

Bangkok, the 6th of March 2010 [PDN]: Thailand Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn revealed that: “The measures are to support the tourism industry. The situation has been recovering but the businesses still need help.”

Thailand has been plagued by political since 2006 ,when a military coup organised by the People’s Alliance for Democracy ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Subsequent rallies and protests have been ongoing over the last 4 years by pro-Thaksin supports the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship. The latest rally, scheduled for the 14th of March is expected to bring upwards of 1,000,000 supporters to a front in Bangkok.

Tourism is Thailand’s primary source of revenue and has steadily been in decline over the last few years as a result of the political situation and the global economic recession. Free insurance coverage along with various other stimulus measures were recently extended by the Thai government following there introduction in 2008 after the Bangkok airport seizure left thousands of tourists stranded.

Tourism and Sports Ministry Spokesman Vachara Kannikar stated that in conjunction with the US$10,000 insurance coverage, victims of any political upheavals will also be offered free medical treatment and compensation of US$1,000 per day if hospitalised for more than 10 days. Tourists that are detained in the Kingdom longer than their intended stay due to riots or political demonstrations will also receive US$100 per day up to US$10,000 in total.

A bit shy of the 40,000 Baht average each tourist spends in Thailand, according to TAT's recent 2010 projection numbers.

Is that all we're worth? And Thailans still makes a 33% PROFIT?

Typical Thai mentality. Make a weak offer, but still make money on someone's misfortune.

As long as you have unrest, as long as you have cop killers and violence and robberies, here's some news that you may find socking, TAT - WE'RE STAYING AWAY!

Collecting any benefits on a claim is about as likely as a blizzard coming to Pattaya. Most likely it's the same "compensation" promise given to those displaced by the airport seige several months ago. Does anyone know of ANY foreigner that was compensated as promised by the Thai gov't? With several hundred thousand travelers affected, you'd think there would be at least a few the TAT could use for publicty/propaganda....

Half-hearted publicity stunt, to be quickly overshadowed by world TV coverage of whatever occurs next Fri/Sat/Sun. Best of luck to anyone unfortunate enough to ever have to put in a 'claim'. Geordie-lad is off to Oz a few snags with Kev to avoid the fireworks.
