Pattaya, the 4th of March 2010 [PDN]: At 6:00pm on Thursday, police Lieutenant Colonel Samran Kamwattana has received report that a fellow officer had committed suicide at his apartment behind the Pattaya police station.

Immediately following the discovery police Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) was informed of the incident and reported to the scene with the Deputy Superintendant, Lieutenant Colonel Tharathep Toopanich and the Deputy Director of Combat, Lieutenant Colonel Krisakorn Thongint.

The officer was found to be Senior Sergeant Major Suporn Auncharoen [48] a Chief Justice of Investigations with the Pattaya police. Snr Sgt Maj Auncharoen had received one gunshot wound to the heart with evidence of gunpowder residue on his right hand. The police issue pistol was found lying on the bed beside his body.

Further police investigations revealed the presence of two presumed suicide notes, one addressed to his family and the other to his colleagues. In the letters he describes, suffering from an unstated illness, whilst being significantly affected by stress and depression as a result of his work with the Pattaya police as such choosing to end his own life.

The number one reason Law officers commit suicide has nothing to-do with the ugliness they see on the job but rather Stress, self created stress as in crimes they commit against civilians while holding a position of power as a police officer. In one U.S.A. study "legal problems were a major reason for the law enforcement suicides" an officer will have legal problem because they break the law, high level laws not petty crimes. Now I am not saying Sgt Maj Auncharoen committed any crimes or ill-treated anyone. Us expats know that the Thai royal police never ever commit any crimes of extortion, or murder, or any other criminal offense. Right!... R.I.P.

Fishy indeed. Surely a proud cop would wear his uniform too..... Hope he's in a better place all the same.

I agree with Columbo, the scene appears to be suspicious. Those familiar with sucidies know that more often than not, male victims will shoot themselves in the head, or stick the barrel in their mouth. Women are more likely to shoot themselves in the heart. Perhaps this victim had some assistance?

The Franag that attended the scene said that stress related to a congenital disease was to blame for this act.

Very very sad.

Hard to tell with these low res pictures but:

Mighty clean looking gun for a point blank self shot.

You'd also expect it to land on the body or to the victim's left.

Any recoil toss from the hand would not be aligned as shown unless a major coincidence.

The right hand also appears to have no blood backspatter on it at all. Can't tell if the right arm does or not.

The exit blood stain seems to indicate a straight through trajectory - a very uncomfortable conventional grip unless he used his thumb. If he used his thumb the gun would not be positioned as if it was in his hand, but pointing toward him on the floor. He also should have a lesion on his right thumb, which it does not look like he does.

Looks like a staged scene and execution to me. The presence of a note, or a gun that looks like it was dropped from a standard hand grip, does not seal it as a suicide.

Take a look at your higher resolution crime scene photos once more PDN. There may be more than initially meets the eye.

I wish the best for him in heaven or in his next life. Suicide by police officers is a serious problem in the USA also. They see the ugly side of life every day.
