Spain 4th March 2010. The cruise ship, S.S. Louis Majesty, heading for Genoa on a 12-day Mediterranean cruise has now returned to Barcelona after being struck by an 8-meter-high freak wave off the north-east coast of Spain, near Marseilles. The wave broke windows and fittings in the area of the saloon where water was taken aboard.
The two dead male victims were identified as being German and Italian, respectively, with a 62-year-old woman also having both her legs broken. Ambulances were waiting at Barcelona when the ship docked. The captain, Commander Bernard Celier, stated that there had been winds of more than 100 k.p.h in the area prior to the one that caused the fatalities and damage, but his ship had not sustained extensive damage. The ship is expected to resume its voyage once the injured victims have received treatment and been taken off.
