Transportation & Medical Experiences In Thailand

Share
My experience on Thai transportation and with the medical system utterly amazed me to the point of astonishment. Perhaps others have had similar experiences, but here is my story.

Generally a Songtaew, we have been told is 10 baht from Jomtien into Pattaya. Well, I have always given 10 baht from any place on Jomtien Beach Road to the first traffic lights at the Thappraya, Threppasit Road. Past this point I always give 20 baht or more if we are taken down to the Dolphin roundabout in Naklua. After 11.00pm we usually paid a bit more due to the lateness and if I go for a big shop at the supermarket, then of course we book the transport to take us straight home. The prices for a private booking to and from the same destinations have always to be argued about as it is never the same on any two days.

I have found most of the drivers very polite especially the ones with families and even some of the younger drivers can be rather helpful.  The older male drivers, I have found to be very aggressive when giving them their 20 baht. I have had verbal abuse from them with some actually chasing me down the road in their vehicle demanding 100 baht from Royal Plaza on the Beach Road side to the beginning of Walking Street. They may give the impression they don’t understand English, but they can swear very well in our language.  I have at times even had to threaten them with the police before they will leave me alone.

Another thing and this has happened a lot, they have taken a full load from their pick up destination only to stop and turf the remaining few off with no explanations. When we have refused to exit the vehicle they start shouting.

An incident yesterday with my son who is here on holiday, we were on the bus to Bangkok and paid 300 baht for the two of us. A third of the way there, the bus was evacuated. We were told to get off without any explanation and no return of the fare we paid. We had to look around then for alternative transport to continue our journey costing us another 300 baht. I know full well that this is a very small amount to pay for such a long journey, but this is supposed to be a standard charge so it is the principle of the matter.

My son, who is in his early twenties, wanted his earlobes repaired as he very stupidly had his ears pierced when he was in his early teens then following his friends like sheep that they were, he had some huge ugly looking things inserted which has enlarged the ear lobe. Now he wants to join the army so wants his lobes repaired.

I asked about, and eventually spoke to a nurse at the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital who informed me that the cost would be around 5-6,000 bahts depending on the amount of work to be done. We went to the hospital the following morning, saw the Surgeon who agreed it was a simple job and could be done immediately. We were sent to pay at the admin office, but after signing forms etc, we were then asked for 35,000 baht.

Cosmetic surgery for the skin around the eyes was under 2,000 baht and it is only around 50,000 for a boob job. So we argued the point but was told that the nurse gave us the wrong information…..  Yeah right, more like the admin was trying to fill their pockets.

Want to issue a WARNING for the etics and procedures of The lasik Center within Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. Had a retina surgery in Sweden and my vision was affected. The lasik center claimed they could correct that. What i didnt know but is common knowledge to all eye specialists is that after a retina surgery you will have an increasing cataract and you will after about two years replace the lens. This the clinic overlooked and in its eagerness of making money they jeopardized my possibilities of regaining full vision. When I complained about this they just shut their doors and didnt reply on my letters. This is the etics of Bangkok Pattaya Hospital

You are NOT alone in your financial adventures with the Pattaya Hospitals. Late February, 2010 I had open heart surgery at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, with full insurance coverage guarenteed,. BUT before I oould leave the facility, I was billed an additional amount of 100,000. Hospital security was summoned and voilently josseled me while sitting in a wheelchair.
My cardologist came to my rescue: He phoned the HEAD Administrator and had my billed altered deleting the 100,000 charges.
QUOTING MY DOCTOR, "They are Theives and were cheating you for 100,000 Baht." This is now an priority issue between the Cardiac Medical Staff and the Hospital aministrators.
The Medical professionals are angry with the Entire administration. "The administrators are putting the safety of OUR patents at risk."

I had my hernioplasty done at Sirikit Navy Hospital. They did a perfect job and the cost was so low as to be laughable. i will never bother with the "for profit" hospitals again. Bangkok Pataya Hospital is pathetic; they want to treat foreigners and charge prices only foreigners can afford but the wankers do not want to deal with foreign insurance companies. Dream on bozos.

Having had a 3 night stay in Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, I too can say that their charges are quite a bit on the high side. Having said that i could not fault both their service and treatment. Having suffered a series of heart attacks and been transported to the Hospital by my landlords son i was treated quickly and efficiently. Their ICU is on a par with any hospital in Australia, UK or USA.
As for Baht bus's...i always give the driver 20 baht (being a farang) however my wife who is african american gave one 20 baht and was given 10 baht change...so their not all bad...and personally imiss the baht bus's when im back homeinaplace with crappy public transport.. A few bad drivers dont make for a bad system. Look at the cabbies in your own home towns...are they any better???

You should have gone back to the Doctor and told him what you where asked to pay. I had a similar problem at the International. being charged every day I had treatment for two weeks after being told I could make a one off payment for the first four days ... To cut a long story short I showed the Doctor the receipts and asked why I had been charged so much after being told to make a one of payment. I had a rather nice refund. The Admin staff will have tried pulling a fast one with your son especially if he is young.some Thais are thieves who tar the few decent ones with the same brush.

I also went to Pattaya Bangkok hospital For a shot. The shot made me feel so awkward that I couldn't ride my motorbike home. I was asked if I wanted to stay overnight. The cost would be about 2500 to 3000 baht which my insurance covered. I was rushed to the finance office to sign a realease form. ON that realease form it stated my bill could be as high as 35000 baht. Why would my bill be 35,000 baht just to sleep off what ever you shot me up with. She reassured me it was just a standard practice. The next day I checked out My bill was 19,900 baht. PATTAYA BANGKOK HOSPITAL and I still have the bill to prove it. I was only there to sleep. They CHARGED ME FOR EVERY PARTICLE that looked my way. THEY ARE HELL BENT ON STEALING YOUR MONEY ANYWAY THEY CAn.

I see nothing unusual about your experiences here, just a normal situtation for most "farangs".....
