Pattaya Police Purge Beach Road of Ladyboys & Prostitutes

A Pattaya police taskforce on Thursday made over 100 arrests along Pattaya Beach. The target of the taskforce was female and ladyboy prostitutes who are gathering along the Beach Road to offer their sexual services to the mainly foreign pedestrians.

Pattaya, the 25th of February 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 1:00am on Thursday, Captain Jamrat Thongjinda (Pattaya Deputy Chief Inspector) led a police taskforce to the Pattaya Beach Road in order to conduct a crackdown on prostitution in the area.

The taskforce conducted their operation along the entire length of Beach Road, from Walking Street up to the North Pattaya’s Dolphin roundabout. Over 100 prostitutes were arrested in the operation.

Police had been acting on the increasing number of reports made by tourists in regards to the ladyboy and female prostitutes becoming a menace to the visiting foreigners, at the same time further degrading Pattaya’s tourism image.

All 100 arrested suspects were taken to the nearby Pattaya Police Station and charged with public solicitation of prostitution, fined 200 baht each and released.

They are ALWAYS at the centre of severe bashings featured on PDN (Thai man gets legs broken, iranian beaten by two katoeys etc. etc. etc. 200B is a laughable fine; it must be much higher if it's going to be a real deterrent. Much better would be to tag them and bar them from beach road, walking st.

JY Kelly (cute name) makes an interesting point; if there is child porn being sold in Pattaya that should be a much higher priority than street walkers, also underage sex workers AND THE SCUMBAG FARANGS who seek them out should also be a higher priority than adult-adult prostitution. Bob has a point, how many of these people were actually soliciting themselves. No doubt the majority were but there could be some innocents there who now have a criminal record for prostitution. The 200 baht fine is a joke, maybe they should lock them up overnight or put them in front of a judge if this is to at least have any deterrent value, but only after real cause for arrest.

This story should concern anyone who cares about human rights. The only legally sustainable way in which to arrest a criminal is to see them actually engaged in the activity, and for prostitution that requires a solicitation usually of an under cover police officer. What they are doing here is simply rounding up anyone who "look" like a prostitute. This essentially means that certain Thais are not free to walk where they want to in their own country. The new Police Chief is showing a complete disregard for the civil liberties of Thai people cleaning up a so called problem that really isn't a problem. In any civilized country the City of Pattaya and its Police Department would be facing massive litigation for false arrest.

The Beach Rd girls/boys take business away from my bar - the police harass the freelancers to get them off the street long enough so horny old men have to go get a bargirl and pay me the barfine. Do it often enough and the girls will start begging me to work for me and it gets them off the street, pushing customers my way. Love it!
