Seventeen year of Phon from the Muang District told how he and a gang of 10 friends have tried every known concoction of krathom leaves available. He went on to say the new mixture is believed to give spiritual protection and physical strength from the ghost of the person’s ashes once the mixture is drunk and that the drink has an indescribable and amazing taste which instantly becomes addictive.
In order to satisfy their thirst of the concoction, the youths drive around looking for funerals, later returning to collect the ashes. They have named the mixture ‘Avita’r after the hit film or ‘Tai Hong’ which means ‘violent death.’
The Chief of the Tambon Bang Chak Village 5 stated that he was well aware of the problem of the latest trend with youths getting high from boiled krathom leaves and confirmed the latest concoction of mixing the juice with human ashes, though he could not understand how they dared to drink it. Many of the kids are into Avitar, both male and female and he thought they did not look too healthy suspecting they would not live long lives.
Truancy officer Somphong Yutao spoke to the students in the hope of getting to the bottom of this new craze and being told they believe the mixture gives them special powers especially with the opposite sex giving off a special aura. He told of his concern stating that they could only monitor the situation and keep the parents informed.
Nakhon Sri Thammarat Governor Thira Minthrasak held a meeting to discuss the problem and ordered a police crackdown. For years, Police have tried stamping out the trend of drinking a mixture of krathom leaves and cola, cough medicine and ground mosquito repellent coils.
