Rhubarb Contains Anti-Cancerous Chemicals

Share
According to researches baking rhubarb for just 20 minutes, increases its levels of anti cancerous chemicals which could now lead to the development of new cancer treatments that are less toxic than current treatments of the disease.

The results of these new findings may be used to study the effects of rhubarbs polyphenols on Leukaemia. The end result is to discover the best combination of polyphenols and chemotherapy agents to kill leukaemia cells, even those that were previously resistant to treatment.

Prior to this study on British rhubarb grown in South Yorkshire, previous studies were done on Oriental medicinal rhubarb which has been recognised for its health benefits and used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

A statement by Dr Nikki Jordan-Mahy from Sheffield Hallam University’s Biomedical Research Center was that research showed that British rhubarb is a potential source of pharmacological agents that may be used to develop new anti-cancerous drugs.

Cancer affects one in three people in the UK and not all treatments are effective and resistance is a common problem so this discovery is important as a novel and less toxic treatment which can overcome resistance.

I totally agree with the down side of rhubarb but as with anything one has to take the good with the bad and sometimes there are ways around the problems, like substituting sugar for artificial sweetners.

Rhubarb is often found to contain custard, "crumble", and sugar which can cause serious obesity and tooth decay especially in 70's children.

For every plus there is a minus.
On the downside rhubard also contains malic acid and this is to be avoided if you suffer with rheumatism.
Malic acid is also found in
strawberries.
