A motorcyclist has been killed after colliding with the side of a garbage truck whilst in the process of overtaking on a bend. The man was subsequently thrown underneath the rear wheels of the truck, killing him instantly.

Pattaya, the 15th of February 2010 [PDN]: On Sunday at around 11:30am, police Lieutenant Colonel Jakarin Tausupap (Banglamung Police Investigator) received a report of a fatal traffic accident on Soi Siam Country Club, Pattaya. A team of police along with members from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation were dispatched to the scene to investigate.

At the scene, near the Pattaya Railway Station, officers discovered the deceased body of Mr. Pah Emprakon [49] from Surathanee province, he had suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident, with his head having been run-over by the 10-wheeler garbage truck. Blood and brain fragments covered the entire road surface around the deceased body. The badly damaged motorbike that he was riding, a Suzuki Smash, was located in the near vicinity.

Police interrogated the driver of the garbage collection truck, Mr. Goragot Kwarmpien [42] who explained that he had been driving along Soi Siam Country Club when Mr. Emprakon approached from behind on the right side of the vehicle. Approaching a sweeping right-hand bend Mr. Kwarmpien alleges that Mr. Emprakon tried to overtake him, at which point he clipped the side of the truck and was thrown from the bike underneath the 10-wheeler vehicle. Mr. Kwarmpien explained to police that he had not enough time to stop and avoid an accident, stating that Mr. Emprakon had been run-over by the right rear wheel of the truck.

Mr. Kwarmpien was taken to the police station for further questioning whilst Mr. Emprakon’s family will now be notified and his body taken for autopsy at the Banglamung Hospital.

Harry, I appreciate you belief in the magical powers of amulets and mystical tattoo's and gold leaf decoration on bikes but I remain skeptical. There are plenty of examples of Thai citizens being killed by death, whilst they were wearing such amulets. I also recall seeing a motorcycle accident victim covered in Thai mystical tattoo's. Mystical tattoo's also did nothing to help a local woman who was dismembered by a Swedish tourist and I also recall some Thai building 'jumpers' coming to a sticky end whilst wearing amulets. I suppose my final point is, wear a motorcycle helmet at all times and keep the speed down to 30 mph even when the roads are quiet. Remember Klunk-Klik every trip!

Hugh, appreciate your point. The Helmets available in Thailand though, whilst seeming to be fairly adequate for beginner's roller skating or a spot of light-canoeing might not prevent the massive head trauma found in a lot of motorcyclists under 10-wheeled trucks.

Amulets, coupled with a bit of gold leaf applied to the motorcycle are one's surest safeguards against accidents and mishaps on Thailand's roads.
Additionally, traditional mumbo-jumbo tattoos will prevent the wearer from being shot or stabbed following any dispute from the road accident he just survived. Local wisdom is always best.

Harry, I know some people believe in the power of amulets but in my opinion they offer little protection against road traffic accidents. I would also point out that if he was wearing a helmet he would have been posting on this forum today, because the spherical shape of the helmet would have just 'bounced' along under the vehicle.

His accident was the result of him neglecting to wear an amulet.
When you wear the correct superstitious charm, you can overtake on blind bends whilst drunk, and complete any manner of reckless driving manouevres without any pompems whatsover.

Unfortunately, so many people here fail to heed this wisdom..

Why would anyone want to see photos of the crushed cranium of a collision victim? The people that should be wearing helmets are not going to be moved by the phots either because they do not read these types of stories, are too ignorant to read, or are oblivious to the dangers not wearing a helmet brings. Personally, if someone doesn't want to wear a helmet, he or she should be left to suffer the consequences.

What would a helmet have done? Did you read the article? His head was run over by the wheel of the truck. Helmet or not, this man is dead due to his reckless driving, not from refusing to wear a helmet. I do agree with you that he should have been wearing one though.

TO :Mister Hugh Jorgan I don’t know who you are but in my book before asking for brain tissues or whatever you would like to see!!!(May be the next one will be your?) Be sensible with or without a helmet as a motorbike driver (did you notice I didn’t say MOTOBIKE!)You should not try to overtake on the inside a turning vehicle, This poor guy paid it with his life! He certainly leave someone who loved him! It’s fault or the system who didn’t teach him not to do that, was he in hurry to get back home after a hard working day?
He certainly in my book was at fault
Many time I nearly clip a lots of them in the same situation, luckily for me I didn’t
This been said peace to him and his family (Easy said!)

I think it would be helpful showed photographs of the full extent of the brain and head injuries including collapsed skull and brain fragments. It would serve as a warning to those who refuse to don helmets. If Mr Pah had been wearing a helmet he would have left the scene of the accident unscathed.
