This apparent ploy to solicit bribes cost me 2000 B and, since,as in the article, I was at the proper office, on the proper day, why didn't they tell me to go to the 90 day desk ?
If the writer had this happen recently then my year old experience and the new Commander,
carry on same-same !

The fact that he doesn't know the difference between a 'overstay' fine and a 'late reporting' fine makes me sure this guy's an idiot.

Anyone that's been here for a while is keenly aware that there is money exchanged in the Imm offices for which you cannot get a receipt for. The policy of each office having "special requirements" lends to the confusion, and opens the door for corruption. Those that do not agree to the local "fee" requirements are most often told to "go to Bangkok", to solve the problem.
I think most foreigners would agree the 90 reporting is just "busy work" for the agency, and serves no real purpose, other than another "opportunity".
It would seem the agency does not wish to simplify the procedures by adding consistent standards throughout the nation, and enforcing them accordingly. Giving foreigners these rules in a handout would also lessen the confusion. The booklets handed out currently leave out many "requirements" (depending on the office) that often lead to misunderstandings....

The comment made by PC appears to state that corruption only existed when the Immigration Office was located in Soi 8. Obvious if any of the other incidents mentioned occurred after the move they are untrue. Whose version of events are believable

I really think the 90 day reporting is not the best system to have. All it does is create mindless work and allows some of the "officials" to squeeze people for cash.

Wish Thailand would graduate to a better standard. Currently in Japan, you report to immigration only when you need to renew your visa, which is every 1, 3 or 5 years. Or you report to the city office when you move or change jobs. Simple and clear.

This 90 day thing sounds so backwards to me.

They tried it on with me as well, I was getting my non-b extended at Suan Plu (yes, it happens sometimes) and the immigration mafia on the 90day window wanted 1800b and i refused, i was leaving the country a week later and the non-b renewal window told me not to worry about it, leave and then report 90 days after I returned and there would be no trouble. No cash changed hands :0)

I had the EXACT thing happen to me on my 90-day renewal but, I decided not to press it and just handed over the 2K Bht. I was told however that the line was long and I would have to wait for awhile for a receipt. I said, "Nevermind", took my renewal and left. Assuming it was a scam but not willing to fight over it.
