Sattahip, the 5th of February 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 6:30pm on Friday, police Lieutenant General Kittiphong Ngaomuk (Region 2 Police Commissioner) was informed by the Workers Rights and Quality of Life Foundation director Mr. Piya Seeracot that a Burmese man had been in contact with him, stating; a group of his fellow countrymen and himself were being forcefully detained and made to work without pay.

The Burmese national Mr. Tern [37] explained that he and a group of his friends were being made to work without pay at the Saphan Sai fishing pier, Samaesarn in Sattahip. He also informed Mr. Seeracot that they had been given very little food and were now fearing for their lives. The Trafficking of Woman & Children Office Gendarme Region 2 officers were sent to investigate the scene and free the detained workers.

At the scene officers located the imprisoned workers, Mr. Da Kee [20], Mr. Lin Te [17], Mr. Tan Chid [17], Mr. Tern Win [37], Mr. Mu Jortu [31], Mr. Chit Go [39] and Mr Mao Mr Maotin [unknown age] releasing them from captivity. Following this, police entered the nearby residence, arresting Mrs. Win [30], who along with her husband had enslaved the seven Burmese men and imprisoned them without food. Her husband managed to flee the scene before police could apprehend him.

All seven captives and Mrs Win were escorted down to the Sattahip police station for further interrogation regarding the situation. Mrs Win and her husband, when he is caught, will face charges of; employing illegal immigrants, illegally detaining people against their will, human trafficking and enslavement.

Under interrogation, the Burmese workers revealed that they had crossed the border on foot at Mae Sord, Tak province. After meeting with the arranged transport pickup in Thailand they believed that they would be sent to work in a textile factory in Bangkok, however; instead they had been taken to Samaesarn, Sattahip to work as fishing boat labourers. They had allegedly worked the last six months without any form of payment and had been detained against their will with very little food.

Police will now continue to investigate the case and attempt to apprehend the husband of Mrs. Win. The Burmese immigrants are expected to be deported back to Burma within the next few weeks.
