Local Residents Protest At Laem Chabang Port

Share
Near Pattaya, a large gathering of concerned local residents around the Laem Chabang Port gathered, protesting over the transportation of goods that are spreading potentially dangerous dust over their homes.

Laem Chabang, the 31st of January 2010 [PDN]: Laem Chabang Mayor Mr. Boonlert Normsin released a statement to the media advising that a protest involving local residents around the Port at Laem Chabang had gathered over pollution in the area.

According to members of the protest, the Siam Commercial Port, JC Marine Port and Siam Sea Port companies, all located at Laem Chabang Port, are transporting a variety of goods past their homes, spreading potentially dangerous dust particles over the area. The goods in transit appear to be; tapioca starch, soda base, and bituminous coal.

The Laem Chabang Port Authority organised a meeting between the three offending companies and leading members from the local community to discuss the issues at hand. During the meeting an agreement was reached that as of the 31st of January 2010 the transportation of these goods past the residential area in question would cease.

Following a series of recent environmental instances at the Laem Chabang Port, authorities are keen to present and maintain environmentally conscious operating strategies. The Laem Chabang Port Authority stated that they would closely monitor this current situation, making sure that the companies in question did not reoffend.
