Residents Protest Government Inaction at Railway Crossing

500 local resident and school students staged a picketed protest at a railway crossing in Chon-Buri. The dangerous crossing was promised a tunnel by the local government whose plans have never come to fruition.

Phanthorng, the 29th of January 2010 [PDN]: At the railway crossing Phanthorng in Chon-Buri, 500 residents and school children gathered to protest against the governments’ inaction over recent deaths at the crossing and their promise to construct a tunnel under the intersection. Protestors completely blocked the railway line, which is the junction of four separate lines heading towards Bangkok, Pattaya and the North Eastern provinces.

Over the last few months several people have lost their lives at the junction due to the extreme danger and lack of warning systems in place at the intersection. At the protest, residents complained peacefully, over the Chon-Buri government and State Railway of Thailand’s failure to act on their promise to build a tunnel under the intersection to alleviate the danger to crossing motorists and pedestrians.

During the protest one train had to apply the emergency brakes stopping at the intersection on its way from Laem Chabang Port to Bangkok. The blocking of the train prompted the State Railway of Thailand into agreeing to meet with the protestors over the construction of a tunnel under the junction to avoid any further deaths. Phanthorng Marshal Mr. Lerson Sasiphong acknowledged the residents appeals and stated he would attempt to discover which government department was responsible for the failed promise.
