Ethiopian Airlines ‘Black Box’ Flight Recorders Discovered

The ‘black box’ flight recorders from the Ethiopian Airlines crash have been discovered by search and rescue teams off the coast of Beirut.

Beirut, the 27^th of January 2010 [PDN]: Search teams involved with the Ethiopian Airlines crash have located the position of the airliners ‘black box’ flight recorders. These recorders monitor all instrumental activity and communications up until the point of impact in the event of an accident.

Lebanese security officials have stated that the search and rescue teams had already located the ‘black box’ locations but are still in the process of retrieving them at present. It is alleged that the recorders have been found approximately 10km west of the city of Beirut in just over 1.3km deep waters, making salvage operations more difficult.

The Ethiopian Airliner, Flight 409, crashed into the Mediterranean Sea minutes after take-off during a severe thunderstorm early on Monday the 25^th of January. All 90 passengers and crew onboard the Addis Ababa bound flight are presumed dead, whilst it is thought at least 24 of the deceased have been retrieved from the water. Marla Pietton, the Beirut French Ambassadors wife was a passenger on the flight.

Search and rescue operations that have been ongoing since shortly after the incident have included Lebanese Navy Troop, UN Interim Forces in Lebanon and the US Navy destroyer USS Ramage along with a Cypriot civilian vessel that was in the area at the time of the incident and is equipped with sonar equipment.

Ethiopian Airlines is a state owned and operated company, which has a good safety record and is considered to be an industry leader amongst the other African airlines. Since the hijacking of one of their airliners in 1996, which was subsequently, ditched into the sea off the coast of Comoros the company has not recorded another incident prior to this most recent devastating accident.
