Thai & BKK Airways Co-operate to Negate Foreign Threats

Bangkok Airways president Mr. Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth welcomed his Thai Airway counterparts’ overtures for mutual co-operation between the two Thai owned companies in an attempt to negate the escalating threat of foreign owned domestic carriers.

Thailand, the 21st of January 2010 [PDN]: In attempts to eliminate the current unnecessary competition between the two airlines a meeting between Mr. Puttipong and Dr. Piyasvasti Amranand from Thai Airways announced a more complete co-operation in which both carriers will benefit whilst fighting the increasing threat of foreign domestic carriers.

”We can co-operate by avoiding route and flight schedule overlapping and by establishing more code-shares,” Dr Piyasvasti told Capt Puttipong. Whilst the Bangkok Airways president stated; ”THAI can concentrate on international routes while we can play a feeder role by transferring their passengers into our domestic and regional routes.”

It is believed that the two airlines will also work together on the proposed establishment of a flying academy by Thai Airways. Due to the varying aircraft types used between the two carriers, co-operation in a flight academy will enable their pilots to gain experience flying a wider variety of planes. However the subject of Bangkok Airways becoming an equity partner in Thai Airways has again been ruled out.

After having taken the reigns of the nation’s flag carrier airline in November of 2009, Dr. Piyasvasti immediately singled out the escalating threat of foreign owned airlines flying domestic routes within the Kingdom, stating the need for the two Thai owned airlines to present a united front against this expansion. Dr. Piyasvasti singled out the fledgling budget carriers Air-Asia and One-Two-Go as being the main threats.

Regarding the Orient Thai Airlines (owner of budget carrier One-Two-Go) approach for an alliance with Bangkok Airways last October Mr. Puttipong declared that the discrepancies between the two airlines made integration impossible. Stating that; Bangkok Airways was much keener to collaborate with the nations’ flag carrier Thai Airways.

Is this a reference to such things as maintenance and pilot training??????
