One Mans Unique Attempt to Raise Awareness on Road Safety

  • Share/Bookmark
French national Robert L. Lambrich has been riding a recumbent bicycle (lay down bicycle) for the last 4 years over thousands of kilometers, attempting to raise awareness on Road Safety and Global Warming in a world now desensitised by traffic accidents and dominated by the combustion engine.

Pattaya, the 17th of January 2010 [PDN]: In the processes of travelling along the Sukhumvit Road to Pattaya, Mr Lambrich was confronted by a PDN reporter who had spotted him whilst driving past. Interested in his travels and the bicycle that he was riding, Mr. Lambrich – pleased for a momentary respite – stopped to give our reporter a brief overview of his travels and intentions.

Mr. Lambrich explained that over 4 years ago his wife had been involved in an avoidable, fatal car accident. As a result of his loss and the perceived acceptance of the prevalence of such tragedies, Mr. Lambrich set about trying to raise awareness of such incidents and the effect that the increasing reliance on motor vehicles was having on the global environment.

Setting out on his recumbent bicycle with only a sleeping bag, first-aid kit, minimal personal luxuries and a handful of clothes, Mr. Lambrich has travelled over 22,500 kilometer in 15 countries, including: Russia, Thailand, Pakistan, China, Vietnam and Columbia to name a few. For the last four years he has travelled an average of 12 hours per day, resting at night, using only a sleeping bag for protection against the elements at night.

Mr. Lambrich’s endeavour is not charitably funded and there is no personal financial gains involved, he merely wants to spread awareness of the aforementioned causes, to the people he meets along his journey. Living off an average of only 100 baht per day, Mr. Lambrich’s diet consists largely of a small portion of chicken and rice, however; he stated that since he has been in Thailand he has enjoyed dinning on traditional local cuisine in the areas that he has passed through.

The recumbent bicycle that he has used on his travels was originally purchased in Amsterdam, Holland. The design is one that is appearing more frequently in the large commercial districts of European countries, as a means of travel to and from work, reducing the need to use overcrowded and troublesome public transport systems.

Note: Mr. Lambrich you are an inspiration to us all! PDN wish you the best of luck and hope you remain safe over your continued travels.

He is in great shape from cycilng. Most people his age are not because they don't cycle for transportation. If he dies doing something he loves then he has completed the cycle and has hurt anyone in the mean time. Good luck sir.

Raise awareness for road safety with 1) no helmet, 2)no rear mirrors, 3) sandles, 4)no protection from road rash, no good protection from the sun.

On the flip side, he looks in good shape.

What politically correct nonsense. I paid taxes when I bought my car and I pay taxes every time I put fuel in it, I don't feel the least bit guilty about using it. Global warming is the witch hunt of the 21st century. If he's so concerned about safety why doesn't he have an airbag, a seatbelt and bumpers on that thing. GET A LIFE BOZO!
