Pattaya, the 13th of January 2010 [PDN]: In a recent press announcement Pattaya City’s Deputy Mayor Ronkid Ekasing expressed his sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Poliakov Oleg, the Russian tourist who died as a result of an avoidable speedboat accident off the coast of Koh Larn on Monday.
As recently as Friday the 8th of January a Maritime safety meeting was held at the Bali Hai Pier, with Thailand’s Transport Minister in attendance. The focus was on maritime safety in and around Pattaya waters, specifically in the highly trafficked route between Pattaya Beach and Koh Larn. Regrettably only 3 days later another tragic avoidable death occurred in the regions troubled waters.

Pattaya City Mayor Ittiphol Khunpluem has requested that the local government prepare a budget to be allocated for maritime safety in the region. One of the proposals that have been suggested is for a series of safety buoys to be installed around the high traffic route between Pattaya and Koh Larn, to warn tourists of the dangers in the area.
In addition, a report has been presented to the Pattaya City Hall administrators in regards to maritime safety, the report will be presented to congress for approval at their next meeting. In relation to the recent tragedy, Pattaya City Hall have announced that they are in cooperation with the Pattaya Assist Tourist Fund, who have been providing help to the victims’ family in their time of need.
Deputy Mayor Ekasing also stated that the operators of the various boating companies in the Pattaya area will be instructed to warn tourists of the dangers associated with swimming and diving in the heavily trafficked area. In conclusion, Mr. Ekasing has guaranteed clear action on maritime safety measures will be in place as soon as possible, to avoid any further tragic accidents and damage to the tourism industry of the region.
