Tokyo, the 11th of January 2010 [PDN]: Poonsawat successfully defended his prized title in a split points decision which saw the two US judges score the fight at 115-113 and 114-114, whilst the South Korean judge had the fight at 117-113 giving the reigning champion a conclusive 2-0 victory.

Poonsawat was o
bviously overjoyed with the result, stating; “I’m proud that I defended the title in a foreign country. He (Hosono) is a big fighter, so I’m satisfied with a decision victory.” Fuelling the fire for another match Poonsawat explained: “If the WBC (World Boxing Council) bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa wants to challenge me, I’m ready to fight against him.”
The 29 year old Thai boxer, who only took the WBA title last September, has now got a more than impressive 40-1 record with 28 KO’s. Hosono who was ranked 10th prior to the Poonsawat bout suffered his first defeat since turning professional, giving him a 16-1 record with 12 KO’s.
After the fight Hosono stated: “It was a shock for me that I couldn’t beat the champion. I couldn’t hit him because of his excellent technique. I’m going to work harder and get stronger.”
