At 2 pm on November 19th 2008 key figures among the Pattaya business and tourism sector attended a meeting at the Green Park Hotel, North Pattaya to discuss the upgrading of U-Tapao airport and regional transportation development matters in general.
Pattaya Business and Tourism Association (PBTA) president, Mr.Chumroon Wisawachaipan, presided over the 9/2008 steering committee conference which was told that U-Tapao, Rayong International Airport would be renamed “U-Tapao, Pattaya International Airport” within the next 2 months.
Rear Admiral Surapong Aiyasanon, deputy director of the airport, discussed the issues surrounding the improvements to the airport facilities. He revealed that the passenger terminal had been improved to facilitate more than 400 passengers and the runway apron had also been improved to handle up to 49 airbuses. In addition, the airport has installed radar which now satisfies the international security standard and allows airlines 24 hour access to the airport.

The mayor of Pattaya City, Mr.Ittipol Khunphome subsequently stated that in the future Pattaya City, the Chonburi Administrative Organization and Thai Royal Navy would hold talks at a future meeting to discuss security, first aid service, mission transfer, and the general standard of the international airport.
