UDD “Protective Cordon” to Shield Police at Pad Protest

BANGKOK, Oct 12 -- Affirming that their protest Monday morning at police headquarters will be peaceful, anti-government Peoples Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters will demand that Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat accept personal responsibility , but pro-government United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plan to be there first to protect the police.

It will be the first confrontation involving the rival groups since the bloody incidents of September 2 which left one UDD member dead and several dozens from both sides injured.

The PAD has for several days been announcing its plans to converge at 10am Monday morning for a peaceful rally in front of the Royal Thai Police headquarters, which will greatly impact traffic at Central World Plaza, Siam Square and the vicinity of the Erawan Shrine.

According to PAD core leader Pipop Thongchai the Peoples’ Alliance will call on the coaltion government and Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to take responsibility for last Tuesday’s clashes between protesters and police at Parliament, which left two persons killed and more than 400 others injured.

The prime minister must resign and the police officers who ordered the tear gas assault on the protesters to be disciplined and held accountable.

Mr. Pipob said 500,000 booklets with photographs of police dispersing demonstrators at parliament on that day would also be distributed for free.

Responding to reports that members of the pro-government UDD plan to surround the police headquarters first before the arrival of the anti-government PAD protesters, Mr. Pipop said his members would avoid confronting the UDD members.

Initially, the PAD leader said his group had already assessed the overall situation and believed that UDD members would not use violence because it could be uncontrollable.

Mr. Pipop said his group said he hoped the military would look after the public interest and that Thailand’s military and business leaders encourage the government to accept responsibility for its actions. (TNA)
